What to Wear to a Henna Night: Kaftan and Takchita Ideas

For a henna night, the bride usually wears a richly decorated takchita or kaftan, very often in green or gold, while guests choose an elegant kaftan in a festive jewel tone that celebrates her without competing with her. Whatever your role, the best outfit is one you can sit in, dance in and have henna applied in without a second thought.

What makes a henna night outfit different

The henna night is one of the warmest moments of a Moroccan wedding celebration: an evening of music, blessings and dancing, usually held in the days before the wedding, when the bride's hands and feet are decorated with henna. It is festive and formal, but also intimate and long. That changes what you need from your outfit:

  • You will sit for a while, especially the bride, while the henna is applied and left to dry.
  • You will dance, often for hours, so the fabric and the fit need to move with you.
  • Henna stains, so sleeves and light fabrics need a little planning.

Ideas for the bride

Green is the colour many families associate with the henna night, and gold is a close companion. Neither is a rule: some brides choose emerald, olive or bottle green, others deep red, ivory with gold embroidery, or a colour that simply means something to them and their family. If tradition matters to you, ask the women of your family what they wore; it is a lovely conversation to have before the wedding.

A takchita is a natural choice for the bride. Its two layers, the underdress (tahtiya) and the overlayer (dfina), give depth and presence, and leave room for the details that make the evening feel special: hand embroidery, beadwork, sfifa braided trim and aakad knotted buttons. A single-piece kaftan in a rich fabric such as drap de soie, brocade or velvet is just as appropriate if you prefer a lighter silhouette.

Our Shailene Olive kaftan, in drap de soie, is a good example of a green that feels both traditional and modern. For a more layered, ceremonial look, the Kylie lebsa in organza and silk brings lightness and movement.

Two practical points for the bride:

  • Sleeves: wide sleeves are beautiful, but they need to stay clear of wet henna. Plan to fold or pin them back while your hands are being decorated.
  • Length: you will be guided, seated and lifted into the dance. Many of our pieces can have their length adjusted free of charge if you add your height and shoe height in the order notes.

Ideas for guests

Guests have more freedom, and jewel tones are a popular choice because they feel celebratory under evening light: emerald, sapphire, ruby, burgundy, amethyst and warm gold. Velvet is lovely for cooler months; crepe, chiffon and satin are more comfortable when the room is warm.

A few points of etiquette are worth keeping in mind:

  • If you know the bride is wearing green, you may prefer a different shade or a different colour altogether so that she stands out.
  • Some families choose a colour theme for close relatives. When in doubt, a quick message to the hosts avoids any awkwardness.
  • A kaftan with refined embroidery reads as elegant; save the most dramatic, bridal-style pieces for your own celebrations.

Lebsa Maha in satin, an elegant option for a henna night guest

The Lebsa Maha, in satin, sits beautifully between wedding and evening wear, which makes it a versatile guest outfit. You will find more options in our evening kaftans.

Comfort for dancing

A henna night is not an evening for standing still. Before you choose, picture yourself dancing at midnight:

  • Fabric: crepe, chiffon and silk move fluidly; heavier velvet and brocade are luxurious but warmer, so consider the season and the venue.
  • Fit: the belt defines the waist, but you should still be able to breathe and raise your arms. Our sizing is based on the garment, with underarm-to-underarm as the main reference; if you are between two sizes, choose the larger one. The size guide has all the measurements.
  • Length: the hem should skim the floor with the shoes you will actually wear, not trail behind you.
  • Shoes: a low heel or elegant flats will carry you much further into the night than stilettos.

Accessories that complete the look

Accessories are where a henna night outfit becomes personal. Most of our kaftans and takchitas come with a matching belt, and a statement belt in the spirit of the traditional mdamma can transform a simple piece. Add earrings with presence, a delicate headpiece or a light veil, and a small bag for the essentials. Keep bracelets and rings to a minimum on henna hands until the paste has dried. Browse our jewellery and accessories to finish your outfit.

Choosing with time to spare

Many of our pieces are one-of-a-kind, so if you have your heart set on a particular colour, it is worth choosing early. We ship worldwide by express carrier from our atelier in Tangier, and each piece arrives in our signature box. If you need help deciding between two styles or sizes, contact our team.

Whether you are the bride or a guest, the right outfit lets you forget about your clothes and enjoy the night. Explore our wedding kaftans and green kaftans to find the piece that feels like yours.
